De Profundis explored the depths of isolation via the staging of  Carissimi's oratorio Jonas and J.S. Bach's Aus der Tiefen, rufe ich, Herr, zu dir, BWV 131. Jonas tells the story of a man who runs from God's call only to find himself in personal darkness, while Bach's BWV 131 musically depicts the suffering of those who reach toward God and hear no answer. The production unfolds as a modern day liturgical drama with interpolations of biblical stories and Gregorian chant.
